At the start of this year I decided to do a crystal singing bowl healing level 1 course. Run by the Sound Healing Academy. The course is an introduction to sound healing and the use of crystal singing bowls as a healing modality.
It's online and you work through it at your own pace, but you must complete the course within three months of purchase. Each student receives a 30-minute call with your assigned tutor, which you can use for discussing queries. The Academy has an amazing portal for the learning experience, with easy to follow videos and comprehensive workbooks. Questions can be posted as comments under videos and one of the Academy team will review and reply to help students out too.
It's not all watching videos though, as part of the course, there is a requirement to carry out a number of practical exercises and to hold healing sessions for family and friends and play singing bowls for them using the knowledge you've gained.

I wanted to take the course as I'd personally experienced the benefits of sound healing from listening to binaural beats music. Binaural beats tunes can be found on the web, I usually listen via YouTube. Simply type in the ailment that's bothering you e.g. headache or stomach ache and the word binaural beats and have a listen to the music in the videos. Check out the instructions on the video for guidance on using the music.
If you're wondering how the bowls work, here's an answer from my course workbook -
Our bodies resonate or vibrate at a particular frequency.
When aspects of our bodies drop out of the natural resonance, which can happen due to stress for example, they have a dissonant vibration meaning we are out of sync, this can result in dis-ease.
There are four ways in which crystal singing bowls work to heal and transform:
1. Sympathetic resonance - Crystal singing bowls balance and harmonise the human body by bringing it back to a natural state of vibration through resonance. They’re able to do this as our body has crystalline structures e.g. connective tissues and bones, therefore our bodies resonate well with sound of bowls as they are made of quartz crystals.
2. Brainwave entrainment – They can have an effect on brain functioning by altering brain waves, enabling humans to move into alpha-theta, which is the healing frequency. Entrainment is bringing a frequency into alignment with a different frequency i.e. they synchronise.
3. Frequency following response – the sound from the bowls enables humans to move into alpha-theta brainwaves, which is the healing frequency. The person experiences relaxation and calm, which affects them positively.
4. Balancing left / right brain hemisphere – balancing the two hemispheres (the masculine and feminine) of the brain takes a person into a state of equilibrium and positive consciousness, which can contribute to improved health.
In addition, the bowl sound has an effect on each chakra as chakras are aligned to particular musical notes.
Wow eh! Amazing that sound can be so beneficial. If only it was used more widely within healthcare environments e.g. at hospitals for patients. I do feel that the benefits of sound in healing will become more widely known about and accepted and that hopefully we'll see sound being used to support people's health and wellbeing.
If I want to progress to a practitioner level for crystal singing bowls, I'd need to complete the level 2 course, after that, I'd be able to work as a crystal singing bowl sound healer. I'm not sure if I'll go ahead with the level 2, but for now, I'm grateful for the experience of completing the course, learning the knowledge and owning my own set of these beautiful bowls.
If you'd like to experience the amazing sound of crystal singing bowls, check out Mei Lan's channel on YouTube. She uses her voice to accompany the bowls, it's very ethereal!
